Big Island

Anchor spots - Lake Norman, NC

Our story

About Big Island.

Big Island is one of the most recognizable boating destinations on the north end of Lake Norman and a favorite stop for boaters looking to swim, relax, and enjoy a quieter side of the lake. Surrounded by open water and scenic shoreline, the island attracts boaters who anchor nearby to float, paddleboard, picnic, or simply take a break from cruising. Its location away from the busier southern lake gives it a laid-back atmosphere that appeals to families and recreational boaters alike.

Unlike the social scene at Cocktail Cove or The Sandbar, Big Island is known more for its natural setting and open space. Many boaters include it as part of a day exploring the northern portion of Lake Norman, often combining a stop at the island with visits to nearby coves, fishing spots, and Lake Norman State Park. It's one of the best places on the lake to enjoy a quieter day on the water while still being surrounded by classic Lake Norman scenery.

Big Island is located on the north end of Lake Norman near Lake Norman State Park and is one of the largest islands on the lake. Boaters can reach it easily from Lake Norman State Park Boat Ramp, Long Island Access Area, or nearby north-lake marinas. The island is visible from the main channel and is often surrounded by anchored boats, paddleboards, and swimmers during the summer boating season.
