Lake Norman covers about 32,040 acres at full pond, including its islands. Net of the 55 islands, the open water is about 31,746 acres. Both numbers are measured from our own shoreline polygon; the commonly published figure of roughly 32,475 acres is a gross surface figure and agrees with ours to about 1.3%.
How much shoreline does Lake Norman have?
About 519.3 miles of mainland shoreline, measured from our own polygon at roughly 59.5 m resolution. A further 20.9 miles runs around the islands, giving 540.2 miles in total. The figure usually published is 520 miles, which our mainland measurement effectively confirms.

One caution: the figure repeated on most pages is 3.4 trillion gallons, which would need a mean depth of about 321 ft on a lake whose maximum is 110–112 ft. What we can compute ourselves is the top foot: one foot of lake level at full pond is 31,746 acre-feet, or about 10.3 billion gallons.
How much water is one foot of Lake Norman?
About 10.3 billion gallons at full pond — 31,746 acre-feet, which is simply our measured full-pond surface times one foot. But a foot is not a fixed amount of water: the surface shrinks as the level falls, so the top foot is the largest one in the lake and every foot below it holds less. The top foot holds roughly 3.3 times what an average foot of the water column does.
When was Lake Norman created?
In 1963, when Duke Energy closed Cowans Ford Dam on the Catawba River. The valley beneath the water held farms, mills, churches and roads, and was photographed from the air before it was flooded.
Who owns and controls Lake Norman?
Duke Energy operates the dam and manages the water level under a federal licence. The lake is a working reservoir first — the level moves with generation, rainfall and season, not with the calendar.
How we measured it

How we got each number.

Every figure marked our measurement comes from one shoreline outline of the lake at full pond — 12,357 points across three connected bodies of water and 55 island holes, last measured September 15, 2026.

A shoreline has no single length.

Measure a coast with a finer ruler and you always get a longer answer — every inlet you were previously cutting across becomes two sides of a cove. So a shoreline figure without its resolution is not really a measurement. Ours is 59.5 m between points, which is worth knowing before setting it beside anyone else's.

Two acreages, because they are two different things. 32,040 acres is the reservoir footprint, islands included — the figure comparable to the ~32,475 acres usually published, which ours agrees with to 1.3%. 31,746 acres is the water you could actually swim across. They are not interchangeable, and comparing one with the other suggests a discrepancy that is not there.

On 520 miles. Our mainland shoreline comes to 519.3 miles, close enough to the usual figure that we read it as confirmation rather than a correction. The islands add 20.9 miles more, and they are reported separately because nobody's dock is on one.

One foot off the top at full pond is 31,746 acre-feet, which is just our measured full-pond surface times one foot. No survey of the lake bed is needed for that, which is why it is the one volume figure on this page that is ours.

But that is the largest foot in the lake. As the level falls the water pulls back off every cove and shallow, the surface gets smaller, and the next foot down holds less than the one above it — a reservoir is a bowl, not a bathtub. The top foot holds roughly 3.3 times what an average foot of the water column does. So “the lake is two feet low” is not twice “one foot low” in water; it is somewhat less, and the further down it goes the less each foot costs.

On the 3.4 trillion gallon figure. It does not hold up, and not because sources disagree — 3.4 trillion gallons is 10.4 million acre-feet, which spread over the published 32,510 acres of surface is a mean depth of about 321 ft, on a lake whose published maximum is 110–112 ft. The self-consistent figure is 1,093,600 acre-feet — about 356 billion gallons — which checks out against 32,510 acres × 33.5 ft of average depth to within half a percent — so the widely-quoted number is about nine times too large. Wikipedia's own infobox lists this lake's volume in acres rather than acre-feet, which may be where the confusion started.

And what we have not measured. We have not surveyed the lake bed, so both the maximum depth and the total volume on this page are somebody else's figures — and on depth the sources disagree between 110 and 112 feet. Full pond, 760 ft above sea level, is Duke Energy's datum rather than an observation of ours.
