The overview

What to expect.

Before the turkey, the stuffing, and that inevitable post-dinner nap, how about a little trot?

The 16th Annual Mooresville/Lake Norman Turkey Trot 5K returns on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 26, 2026, bringing runners, walkers, families, and little gobblers together for one of Mooresville's favorite holiday traditions.

Whether you're chasing a personal record or just making room for another helping of mashed potatoes, this is one Thanksgiving tradition you can feel especially good about.

That's because every registration supports The Christian Mission, helping local families access food, clothing, housing assistance, education, and other essential services.

Good exercise. Great cause. Extra pie later.

What's not to love?

A Thanksgiving Tradition That Gives Back

The Turkey Trot isn't just about crossing a finish line. It's about showing up for our neighbors.

Proceeds benefit The Christian Mission, a Mooresville nonprofit that provides essential assistance and support to more than 6,000 local individuals and families each year.

And you don't have to be a serious runner to participate.

The 5K welcomes competitive runners, casual joggers, walkers, families, and even participants pushing strollers.

This year's race introduces three starting waves, making it easier for everyone to enjoy the course at their own pace.

Something for Every Little Turkey

The morning begins with a half-mile Kids' Fun Run at 8:30 AM, designed for children ages 10 and younger.

Then the grown-ups—and any ambitious young runners—take their turn.

Thanksgiving morning schedule:

8:00 AM: Participant arrival, check-in, and pre-race activities
8:30 AM: Kids' Fun Run (half mile, ages 10 and under)
9:00 AM: 5K Wave 1 — Competitive runners expecting to finish under 25 minutes
9:05 AM: 5K Wave 2 — Recreational runners expecting to finish in 25–40 minutes
9:10 AM: 5K Wave 3 — Walkers, families with young children, and strollers

Whether you sprint, jog, or stroll, you'll be part of a Thanksgiving morning filled with community spirit.

A Little Friendly Competition

For those with a competitive streak, there are prizes waiting at the finish line.

The top three overall male and female finishers will receive gift cards to a local running store, while the top three finishers in each age division will receive a festive Turkey Trot prize.

And if you're more interested in the post-race breakfast than a podium finish?

That's perfectly acceptable, too.

Want to Give a Little More?

You can make an even bigger difference by bringing canned goods or other shelf-stable food donations on race morning.

Not much of a runner? Volunteers are welcome, too!

It's a wonderful way to kick off Thanksgiving by giving back to the Lake Norman community before gathering around your own holiday table.

LKN Life Tip: Register before November 1 to save on the 5K entry fee, and pick up your race packet before Thanksgiving morning if possible. Bring a few nonperishable food items to donate, and remember: the best part of a Turkey Trot is that you've already earned your Thanksgiving feast before breakfast!
