If your idea of a perfect Friday night involves a glass of sangria, a glass bowl, a tray of live houseplants, and a tiny ceramic mushroom — congratulations, you've already invented the experience that Planthouse Huntersville sells for $45. Their Fairy Garden Terrarium Workshop in Birkdale Village is the closest thing the Lake Norman area has to a guilt-free craft night out, and it's the gateway drug to a whole lineup of workshops you didn't know you needed.
Planthouse is a small chain of experience-based plant shops — part premium houseplant retailer, part DIY workshop space, part adult-beverages-and-make-things bar. The Huntersville location, tucked into Birkdale Village, is 5 minutes from Davidson and 25 from Charlotte. Here's what to know before you book.

What the Fairy Garden Workshop actually is.
The Fairy Garden Terrarium Workshop is one of Planthouse Huntersville's signature instructor-led classes, and it's the one I recommend to first-timers because it's the perfect on-ramp. You arrive, you sit down at a table, you get handed a glass terrarium bowl, a tray of live mini houseplants, and a small mountain of fairy-garden decor — ceramic mushrooms, butterflies, tiny woodland creatures, miniature moss patches. An instructor walks you through layering the soil, arranging the plants, and styling the scene.
Roughly 60-90 minutes later, you walk out with *an actual finished thing* — a glass-bowl miniature world that looks like a storybook page you assembled yourself. The plants are real and care-friendly. The fairy garden decor is yours to arrange however you like. The whole class is beginner-friendly; no experience needed.

The workshop runs about $45, all materials included. Show your ticket at the retail counter and you get 20% off any plants you buy that day. This is a real discount, and I've watched several people leave with a terrarium and a $40 monstera they bought on the way out.

The other Planthouse workshops worth knowing.
The Fairy Garden Workshop is the most photogenic and the easiest pitch to make to a non-plant-person friend, but Planthouse Huntersville's full workshop lineup is impressive once you start looking. A short tour of what's on the calendar in 2026:
Boozy Bonsai. What it sounds like. You shape and plant a real bonsai while drinking, and someone walks you through pruning. Adult only, naturally.
Succulents and Sangria. The other workshop named for its pairing. You build a succulent arrangement in a ceramic pot while drinking sangria. Date-night staple.
Kokedama. The Japanese moss-ball plant-mounting technique. Looks impossibly elegant when finished, surprisingly approachable in person.
Jellyfish Terrarium. A signature Planthouse workshop — a terrarium designed to look like a jellyfish floating in glass. Frequently sells out.
Kids Adventure Terrarium. The family-friendly version. Younger crowd, less precious materials, same energy. Good for ages 6-12 with a parent helping.
Mother's Day, Halloween, Christmas seasonal workshops. Themed terrariums for whatever's on the calendar. Holiday-specific decor.
When to go, and what to expect on arrival.
Friday and Saturday evenings are the busy slots. Date-night crowd, bachelorette parties pre-Disney-Springs-on-Saturday energy. If you want a calmer experience, book a Sunday afternoon or a weekday evening. The space is part retail shop, part workshop area in the back — expect to walk through aisles of premium plants and ceramic pots before you get to your table.
Show up 10-15 minutes early if you want a glass of wine before the instructor starts. Most workshops are BYO-tolerant in spirit but the bar on-site is the easier move — beer, wine, and mimosas are reasonably priced and they're the move. The vibe lands somewhere between a craft cocktail bar and a plant nursery, which is a more comfortable hybrid than it sounds.
★ Worth knowing Specialty workshops sell out. The Fairy Garden, Jellyfish, and seasonal workshops routinely book up 2-3 weeks ahead, especially Saturday evening sessions. Walk-in DIY (the simpler $30-38 terrarium build) is always available during store hours and doesn't require a reservation.
Why I keep coming back.
The honest reason Planthouse works is that it solves an actual problem: it gives you something to do on a date or with a friend that isn't dinner-and-a-movie and isn't a bar. You leave with something physical you made yourself, which feels increasingly rare. The plants live in your house for years. You point at the terrarium when someone visits and say "I made that," and you've already created a small social asset that justifies the $45.
It's also one of the more interesting things in Birkdale Village — which has been getting steadily better over the last few years — and it pairs naturally with dinner at one of the Birkdale Village restaurants on either side. Workshop at 6:30, dinner at 8:15. The whole evening is set.
For more family-friendly things to do near Lake Norman, the Kids Adventure Terrarium Workshop at Planthouse is one of the better rainy-Saturday answers we've found. It pairs well with a morning at Lazy 5 Ranch if you're doing a full family day in the Huntersville-Mooresville corridor.
See you at the workshop table.
