Lake Norman *Boat Launch Ramps*

Whether you're launching a fishing boat before sunrise, taking the family tubing for the day, or heading out for a sunset cruise, knowing where to launch on Lake Norman can save time, money, and frustration.

Lake Norman offers more than a dozen public boat ramps, including several free NC Wildlife access areas, county-operated launch facilities, and marinas that provide launch services, slips, fuel, and boat storage. This guide covers every major boat launch on Lake Norman, organized by location and type of access.

There are three primary types of boat launches on Lake Norman:

Free public boat ramps operated by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission
County-operated ramps that charge launch fees
Private marinas offering launch access, boat slips, dry storage, fuel, and services

If you're looking for the best overall public launches, most local boaters recommend:

Blythe Landing (Huntersville)
Ramsey Creek Park (Cornelius)
Hager Creek Access Area (Mooresville)
Stumpy Creek Access Area (Mooresville)
Lake Norman State Park (Troutman)

Before you launch

A little prep saves a lot of stress on a busy Saturday. Most public access areas are free, but a couple — Stumpy Creek and Ramsey Creek — charge a small ramp or parking fee, so check the signage when you arrive. Go early on weekends and holidays, because the popular ramps and their lots fill by mid-morning; before 9am is golden, and the Fourth of July is its own animal entirely. Stage your boat in the staging area rather than on the ramp itself — load your gear, drop your drain plug, and untie before you back down. Keep an eye on the lake level, too: Duke Energy manages Lake Norman and it can sit several feet low in a dry stretch, which makes the shallower ramps tricky.

One rule worth knowing before you go: life jackets are required for everyone aboard, and in North Carolina anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 must complete a NASBLA-approved boating education course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more.

Mooresville: the Highway 150 corridor

The east shore around Highway 150 has the highest concentration of ramps on the lake, which makes it the default launch zone for a lot of locals.

Pinnacle Access Area

River Highway (Hwy 150), Mooresville, near the 150 bridge. One of the workhorses of the lake and the best pick when you need capacity: five ramps, a roomy lot that handles just about any rig, and open 24 hours. The waterfront bar Apps & Taps is right around the bend.

McCrary Creek Access Area

1459 River Highway, Mooresville. Just down 150 and adjacent to Queens Landing, McCrary has four ramps, a courtesy dock, restrooms, and a big parking lot, with restaurants nearby. An easy, well-equipped launch.

Stumpy Creek Access Area

241 Stumpy Creek Road, Mooresville. An angler favorite next to Stumpy Creek Park, with two ramps and a good-sized lot. There's a small launch fee (around $2), and the adjoining park has restrooms.

Hager Creek Access Area

Kemp Road, Mooresville. A handicap-accessible ramp with small-boat and canoe/kayak access, tucked off the Brawley School Road peninsula. Known for ample parking.

Inland Sea Marina

Marina launch 114 Bowfin Circle, Mooresville. A full-service marina with a private ramp, fuel dock, pump-out, ship store, wet slips, and dry storage — launch, fuel, and provision in one stop.

West shore: Denver and Sherrills Ford

West shore: Denver and Sherrills Ford The Lincoln County side puts you on the water without fighting Mooresville traffic.

Beatties Ford Access Area

Unity Church Road / NC-16, Denver. Next to Beatties Ford Park, with multiple ramps, ample parking, and 24-hour access. A dependable mid-lake launch on the west side.

Little Creek Access Area

Burton Lane, off Webbs Chapel Road, Denver. A straightforward west-shore ramp, handy if you're coming from the Lincoln County side of the lake. Safe Harbor Westport · marina launch 7879 Water Oaks Drive, Denver. A private ramp with a fuel dock, wet slips, dry storage, and store.

North end: Catawba and Troutman

The upper lake is quieter and more serene — good water to launch into if you want to fish or cruise away from the south-end crowds.

Long Island Access Area

Long Island Road, Catawba. Up on the quiet northern end, with a boat ramp plus a small-boat and canoe/kayak launch. A good put-in for the upper lake.

Lake Norman State Park

Boat Launch Drive, off State Park Road, Troutman. More than a ramp — a whole day out. The launch suits smaller boats (nothing much over 25 feet), and you also get a swim beach, hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and campsites. Summer launch hours run roughly 7am to 9pm.

Skippers Landing Marina

Skippers Landing Marina · marina launch 1152 Perth Road, Troutman. A marina with a boat launch plus gas, a grocery, and food on the upper-east side of the lake.

South end: Cornelius and Huntersville

Closest to Charlotte and the busiest water on the lake, these two are the south-end staples.

Blythe Landing

NC Highway 73, southern shore, Huntersville. One of the roomiest lots and easiest ramps on the lake — big enough that even large boats launch without drama. Restrooms and docks on site make passenger pickups and provisioning easy, which also makes it a great pick for first-timers still learning to back a trailer.

Ramsey Creek Park

Nantz Road, Cornelius. The south end's do-it-all spot: a boat ramp alongside the area's main public swimming beach — a rarity on Lake Norman — plus restrooms, a dog park, and picnic tables. Ramp fees run roughly $3 to $8, with discounted season passes available.
